Bereavement can be traumatic when the death is sudden, or is of someone very close, or if the body is found in shocking circumstances.

It is particularly hard to recover from bereavement if there has also been early bereavement or traumatic loss. Many people will recover from bereavement quickly, some will not. Recent research recognises about two to three years as a 'healthy' grieving period.
